This is one of the most common questions we get asked, and for good reason. We live in a “quick fix” society that wants results yesterday. But the true answer is that it depends. The goal of whatever treatment we provide is always to restore movement and proper function to the body. We often see patients’ symptoms improve or resolve within 1-2 visits, but this is not always the case. Often, the underlying cause of your symptoms has been sitting dormant for some time, even longer than you’ve been experiencing pain. Faulty posture, past traumas, poor diet, increased stress, and lack of sleep are all factors that can play in to not only the severity of our health conditions but also to the quickness of our recovery. You don’t take one or two days worth of blood pressure medication and expect it to normalize forever, right? Sometimes it will take multiple weeks to help normalize your body’s response to it’s long-standing dysfunction. What we can assure you is that you will not be “sold” on more treatment than is necessary. Dr. Butwin will work with you on an individualized basis to determine the proper number of treatments and additional therapies that you will need to regain optimal health.

A common misconception about chiropractic is that once you visit one, you will become “addicted” or have to come back forever. This is because many chiropractors try to sell their patients on long-term, multi-visit contracts. I recently had a patient who was told by another D.C. that for her minor neck strain, she needed to sign up (and pay for) 3 visits per week for a YEAR! She walked out, and thankfully into our clinic. I treated her three times and her symptoms resolved. She now comes in every few weeks to ensure her spine is functioning properly and to prevent that sort of injury from ever occurring again. The truth is that you only have to continue going to the chiropractor as long as you wish to maintain the health of your neuromusculoskeletal system. Going to a chiropractor is much like going to the dentist, exercising at a gym, or eating a healthy diet: As long as you keep it up, you will continue to enjoy the benefits. Just like your car, your spine experiences normal wear and tear as you walk, drive, sit, lift, sleep, and bend. Routine chiropractic care – changing the oil, as we call it – can help you feel better, move with more freedom, and stay healthier throughout your lifetime.

Chiropractic is a form of physical medicine and the side-effects are similar to those experienced with physical therapy. The most common are short-term increases in muscle soreness or stiffness that can range from extremely light to significant in intensity. These symptoms occur in a minority of patients. During chiropractic manipulation, all care is taken to make sure you are in a comfortable, relaxed position. The adjustment itself is a gentle, quick thrust through the joint’s natural plane of motion and should not be painful. Sometimes, when a patient “guards” against the adjustment by subconsciously tightening their muscles, the delivered treatment can be uncomfortable, but this is very uncommon and quite transient. Likewise, during Active Release Technique, re-creation of symptoms is common, but after treatment, pain is usually much less or non-existent.

We often hear patients tell us that their medical doctors tell them to never let a chiropractor adjust their necks due to the risk of stroke. As the research below shows, you have a much greater chance of getting struck by lightning, and taking a drug for a headache is far more dangerous! We pay about $1,000/year in malpractice premiums, while neurologists pay this amount every 2 weeks. Our premiums would be outrageous if the claims of adjustments commonly causing strokes were valid. In the vast majority of stroke cases, a pre-existing dissection has usually been found, and it generally would take nine times the force created by a chiropractor to cause an idiopathic dissection (Symons 2001, Haldeman 2001, Cassidy 2008). The bottom line is that chiropractic adjustments are among the safest procedures performed in medicine today, and patients are always made aware of the risks, benefits, and alternatives to care before treatment.
